Google, Facebook To Build High-Capacity Undersea Cable From LA to Hong Kong
October 14, 2016

Google and Facebook announced to cooperate with a China Soft Power Technology subsidiary to build a high-capacity undersea internet cable connecting Los Angeles and Hong Kong, reported Channel News Asia on October 13. The 12,800-kilometer Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN) will be able to transfer around 120 terabytes of data per second, capable of handling 80 million high definition video conference calls simultaneously, said Google. PLCN will give Facebook more diversity and resiliency and help connect Asia and its data centers in the United States. The undersea internet cable is slated to begin operation in mid-2018.
